Health Benefits of Olives

1. Hair and Skin Health

Because olives are full of antioxidants (most importantly vitamin E), eating them on a regular basis can strengthen your hair and skin. When you have enough antioxidants in your body you are protected against cell damage that leads to aging skin and weak hair.

Vitamin E also helps protect your skin from harmful ultraviolet rays that you are exposed to in the sun. In the long run, this could protect you from harmful skin cancers as well.

2. Protects against Anemia

Olives contain a high iron content, which will help those of you who are anemic. Ripe olives contain 3.3 grams of iron for every 100 grams, which is more than your daily recommended dose (18 mg).

3. Digestive Health

There is a high fiber content in meaty olives and this fiber promotes healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.

100 grams of olives contains 3.2 grams of fiber so I wouldn’t recommend getting your entire daily fiber dose (25-38 grams per day) from olives alone… that would be a lot of olives! Still, 3.2 grams of fiber is more impressive than many other salty snack options.

4. Weight Loss

Olives are full of monounsaturated fats, which are a healthy fat. When you substitute saturated fats with monounsaturated fats, you’re more likely to lose weight and lower your cholesterol levels.

5. Cancer Prevention

Olives help decrease chronic inflammation because they are rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients.
